State Hub
Sweden
Sweden has one of the highest per-capita Kurdish populations in Europe, with an estimated 100,000 Kurds among a national population of 10 million. Major communities are in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Södertälje. Turning introductions into real support, collaboration, and opportunity.
Kurdish Students in Sweden
Kurds began arriving in Sweden as political refugees from Iraq and Turkey in the 1970s and 80s, with further waves in the 1990s. Sweden is home to Roj TV (now Sterk TV) and a robust Kurdish-language media scene. The Swedish Kurdistan Organization (SKF) and numerous local associations are active.
Swedish higher education is tuition-free for EU/EEA students and offers competitive programs in engineering, medicine, social sciences, and humanities. Stockholm University, Uppsala University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers, and Lund University are among the top institutions. Many Kurdish students in Sweden pursue graduate and doctoral degrees.
Sweden's integration policies and Kurdish community infrastructure make it one of the most supportive environments for Kurdish students in Europe. This hub connects students with community organizations, mentors, and scholarship opportunities.
